Elementary plan to honour author
Date: 01 October 2008
THOUSANDS of copies of a classic Arthur Conan Doyle novel will be distributed across Edinburgh and Glasgow next year to mark the 150th anniversary of the Scottish author's birth.
The two cities will be joining forces with Bristol to mount a massive reading campaign, which will see free copies of The Lost World distributed through libraries, schools and supporting organisations.
An exclusive cover has been designed by Aardman Animations, featuring their most famous creations, Wallace and Gromit.
The reading campaigns in each area will be supported by a programme of public, community and schools events, including performances, films, discussions, debates and readings.
Sir Arthur was born of Irish parentage in Edinburgh in May 1859, and was 30 years old when he introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes in 1887.
In recent years, thousands of free copies of Kidnapped and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, both by Robert Louis Stevenson, have been distributed around Edinburgh.
