i did my whole second year at uni on maya. personally i hated it with a passion, it is very complicated in areas like the modelling, rigging etc, but the animation part is fairly staight forward. some people take to it straight away, but for sum its a little harder to get a hang of.
if u want to go straight to the animating u can download pre-made models frm a site called 'high end 3D', u cn put it straight into maya and have a play with the animation tools.
http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/character_rigs/
this link goes direct to the list of rigged models that u cn download to maya (all free)!!
my advice wud be to go on amazon or play and get urself sum good maya books, there are sum really good ones out there, and they will help loads. also join a maya forum, this will cum in really handy if u get stuck on anything, the people there range frm amatures to maya experts, so they will no doubt have an answer for ur probelm.
i hope this helps and i havnt put u off maya. wen its used well u can do sum really good stuff with it. not just 3D stuff, 2D aswell.
